Whatever your aesthetic, our collection offers designer quality foundations.

We refresh our collection regularly as new samples arrive, offering evolving options from established designers. You might discover discontinued styles no longer available elsewhere, or find that perfect dress that's been waiting just for you at exceptional sample pricing.

Our Quality, Value and Expertise come Standard

Every sample gown features superior designer construction including hand-sewn details, quality boning for support, premium fabrics from around the globe, and meticulous finishing that ensures excellent alteration potential. This craftsmanship means your dress will transform beautifully whilst maintaining its integrity.

Sample pricing offers extraordinary value - genuine designer quality at a fraction of retail cost ensuring you receive custom designer results at accessible pricing whilst maintaining exceptional quality and construction standards.

Designer samples may show minimal wear limited to hem areas from try-ons. This normal condition is easily addressed during professional alterations and cleaning. We assess every dress honestly during consultation, discussing any considerations transparently so you make informed decisions.

Understanding Sample Dresses

What Are Sample Wedding Dresses?

Sample wedding dresses are genuine designer gowns used for display purposes or try-ons in boutiques and by designers. When you try on a wedding dress anywhere, you're typically trying on a sample. These are the actual dresses that help brides envision their perfect gown.

At Posy of Threads, we source our samples directly from established designers, ensuring authentic quality rather than replicas. Each sample represents the same craftsmanship, materials, and design excellence as ordering new from that designer - just available immediately at sample pricing.

Why Choose a Sample Wedding Gown?

Immediate availability eliminates months of waiting. Sample gowns go home with you (after alterations) on your timeline, not the manufacturer's schedule. This flexibility suits shorter engagements or changed wedding dates without compromising on designer quality.

Exceptional value allows you to access designer excellence whilst preserving budget for expert alterations, accessories, or other wedding priorities. The money you save on sample pricing can fund comprehensive customisation through alterations, creating truly unique results.

Sample shopping offers tangible experience with real dresses rather than imagining how a dress might look from photos or drawings. You see actual fabrics, feel real quality, and try on genuine designer construction - making confident decisions based on reality rather than hope.

Sample Gowns  vs Custom Ordering your gown

Custom ordering means waiting 4-6 months for manufacturing plus additional time for alterations. Sample gowns are available immediately, ready for alterations to begin as soon as you choose your dress. This timeline difference significantly reduces pre-wedding stress.

Sample pricing reflects the dress's purpose - display and try-on rather than being made specifically for one bride. This doesn't diminish quality; it simply makes designer excellence accessible at lower investment whilst maintaining identical construction and materials standards.

Samples offer unique opportunities to find discontinued styles or one-of-a-kind pieces no longer available through regular ordering. Your sample might be the only one available anywhere, making your dress genuinely unique beyond just custom fit and alterations.

Making Smart Choices for your perfect wedding

Shopping Smart for Sample Gowns

Sample dress shopping requires slightly different considerations than ordering new gowns. Understanding these differences helps you maximise value, make informed decisions, and ensure your chosen sample becomes your perfect custom dress through expert alterations.

The key is focusing on the dress's foundation - quality construction, flattering silhouette, and alteration potential - rather than perfect fit during try-on. Expert alterations transform that sample into your custom dress, so initial fit matters less than final potential.

How to Evaluate Sample Gown Quality

Assess construction quality by examining seam work - are seams straight, secure, and well-finished? Check internal structure including boning placement and cup construction. Evaluate finishing details like hem finishing, zipper quality, and how well decorative elements are attached.

Quality construction indicates excellent alteration potential. Superior seam allowances provide adjustment flexibility, proper internal structure maintains support through alterations, and well-executed finishing ensures professional results. Designer samples typically excel in these areas.

Consider the style's flattering potential for your figure beyond the sample size fit. Does the silhouette enhance your natural shape? Will the neckline complement your features? Can alterations achieve your ideal proportions? These factors outweigh whether the sample buttons completely during try-on.

Understanding the Alteration Potential

Professional alterations can typically adjust dresses up or down two sizes maximum whilst maintaining design integrity. Understanding this limitation helps you choose samples that alter successfully rather than falling in love with impractical foundations requiring extensive reconstruction.

Choosing samples slightly larger than your measurements generally provides more alteration options than choosing ones too small. Taking in is typically easier and less costly than letting out, which may require fabric additions and extensive work beyond basic alterations.

Sample condition matters for alteration planning. Minor hem wear is normal and addressed through hemming. Previous alterations may limit further adjustment potential if seam allowances were used. We assess every sample's alteration potential honestly during consultation, guiding you towards realistic choices.

Getting the Right Size for your gown

Sample Gown Sizing

Bridal sizing runs 1-2 sizes smaller than street clothing - a fact that surprises most first-time bridal shoppers. A regular size 8 typically translates to bridal size 10-12. A street size 16 usually aligns with bridal 18-20. This isn't personal; it's industry-wide historical sizing standards.

Understanding sizing differences prevents disappointment during try-ons. The sample being "too small" doesn't mean the style won't work - it means professional alterations will adjust it to your measurements whilst maintaining the design you love.

How We Guide Sizing Decisions for your Gown

During consultation, we take comprehensive measurements including bust, waist, hips, and height. We assess your proportions, examine chosen samples for alteration potential, and provide realistic guidance about which options work best for your specific measurements.

This assessment is comfortable and conversational. We explain what we're measuring and why, discuss any sizing considerations honestly, help you understand alteration potential for various samples, and answer questions ensuring you feel informed and confident about your choice.

Our 35 years of experience means we accurately predict how samples will alter, which size differences are manageable, and when pursuing a particular sample makes sense versus exploring alternatives. Trust this expertise to guide you towards samples that become your dream dress.

Between Sizes and Special Situations we look for

Many brides fall between two sizes - perhaps a size 12 bust with size 14 hips, or measurements exactly between size standards. This is completely normal and doesn't complicate alterations. Professional fitting accommodates between-size measurements routinely since bodies rarely match standardised charts exactly.

When between sizes, choosing the larger sample is generally advisable. Taking in is typically easier and less expensive than letting out. A slightly-too-large sample provides more alteration flexibility and better maintains design integrity than one that's too small.

Special situations including pregnancy, planned weight changes, or significant measurement variations require honest discussion during consultation. We help you time fittings strategically, choose samples with adequate adjustment room, and plan alterations accommodating your specific circumstances whilst ensuring perfect fit on your wedding day.

Trying On our Sample Wedding Gowns

Sample gowns come in specific sizes, but don't worry if they don't fit perfectly during try-on. We're experts at helping you visualise how each dress will look after professional alterations transform it into your custom fit through strategic techniques.

We use professional fitting methods including clips to show how dresses will fit when taken in, discussion of how bodices can be restructured or let out, and guidance on how hemming transforms overall proportions.

Our decades of experience mean we accurately predict your final results.

Bring your wedding shoes (or shoes with similar heel height) as this affects hem length and overall proportions. If you have specific undergarments planned, bringing them helps visualise the complete look. We recommend bringing just 1-2 trusted guests whose opinions you genuinely value.

After You've Chosen Your Wedding Gown

When you find your dress, we begin planning your alteration journey. We discuss the complete timeline, schedule your first fitting (typically 6-8 weeks before your wedding), provide care instructions for storing your dress safely, and answer all questions about the process ahead.

Our comprehensive alteration service ensures your sample gown transforms into a custom-fitted masterpiece. With 35 years of experience, we understand designer construction and use techniques preserving your dress's integrity whilst achieving your perfect fit and any desired customisation.

Throughout your journey from selection to final fitting, we're your trusted partner ensuring every step reflects the same care, expertise, and commitment to your satisfaction. You're never just another appointment - you're a bride whose vision we're genuinely invested in achieving.

Understanding Your Alteration Journey

Alteration Timeline & Process

Understanding the alteration timeline helps you plan confidently and ensures adequate time for achieving perfect results. Wedding dress alterations require multiple fittings and careful work - rushing compromises quality, whilst proper timing ensures stress-free perfection.

We recommend beginning alterations 6-8 weeks before your wedding day. This timeline accommodates the typically required 2-3 fittings whilst providing flexibility for any unexpected adjustments. During peak wedding season, booking early may mean the difference between missing out or securing your preferred dates.

Getting to Know Your Fitting Schedule

Your first fitting occurs 10-12 weeks before your wedding and typically lasts 45-60 minutes. We assess your dress comprehensively, mark all necessary alterations, discuss customisation possibilities, and create a clear plan ensuring we're aligned on your final vision before beginning work.

Second fittings occur 4-6 weeks before your wedding, reviewing completed alterations and making refinement adjustments. This progressive approach ensures each fitting builds toward perfection rather than attempting everything simultaneously, allowing proper assessment and adjustment between appointments.

Your final fitting happens 2 weeks before your wedding, ensuring your completed dress fits flawlessly. We demonstrate bustle operation if applicable, provide final care instructions, and celebrate seeing you in your perfected gown. This timing allows for final steaming (if client chooses to) and any last-minute tweaks if needed. For a polished look appearance, steaming is very highly recommended, and able to be provided at a separate cost.

At the final fitting the client confirms and approves with all alterations, modifications, and customisations completed on their gown.

Request for further changes after approval will be subject to additional charges. Timeframes outside of this may incur a rush fee.

Between Fittings and Open Communication

Between fittings, we execute your alterations using professional-grade materials and time-tested techniques. We maintain open communication about progress, contacting you if any considerations arise requiring discussion or decisions about your dress and its transformation.

Most alterations require 2-3 fittings total, though complex work including extensive restructuring, significant size changes, or vintage restoration may need 3-4 appointments. We discuss your specific timeline during initial consultation, ensuring realistic expectations about the process ahead.

If your body changes during the alteration period, inform us immediately so we can adjust our approach and timing. We can accommodate minor changes through flexible fitting schedules and strategic alteration techniques, ensuring your dress fits perfectly on your wedding day regardless of fluctuations.

Protecting Your Investment

Wedding Dress Care Instructions

Proper care protects your dress investment from selection through your wedding day and beyond. Understanding how to store, transport, and handle your gown ensures it remains beautiful throughout your journey and preserves perfectly for future generations if desired.

Your wedding dress represents significant emotional and financial investment. Taking proper care requires minimal effort whilst preventing damage, staining, or deterioration that could compromise your dress's appearance or require costly repairs before your celebration.

Caring for your Gown Before Your Wedding Day

Store your dress in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight, which can yellow or fade fabrics over time. Hang it properly using a padded hanger that distributes weight across the shoulders rather than creating stress points that damage fabric or distort shape.

Keep your dress in its garment bag to protect from dust, pets, and accidental spills or damage. Ensure the storage area has adequate air circulation - closets that are too humid can encourage mildew growth, whilst those too dry can make fabrics brittle.

Avoid storing near anything that could transfer colour or odour including perfumes, cleaning products, or brightly dyed clothing. Check your dress periodically for any issues, but handle it minimally and always with clean, dry hands to prevent transferring oils or dirt.

Transportation and Wedding Day Care

Transport your dress laying flat in a vehicle if possible, or hanging in a spacious area where it won't be crushed or wrinkled. Never leave it in a hot car - temperature extremes can damage delicate fabrics and cause yellowing or deterioration.

On your wedding day, designate someone to help you move safely in your dress, managing your train and bustle. Have a backup plan for unexpected weather - umbrellas for rain, fans for heat, and careful planning for outdoor photos preventing grass stains or dirt.

If spills occur during your celebration, blot (never rub) immediately with a clean white cloth. Avoid using water or stain removers yourself - professional wedding dress cleaning requires specialised knowledge and products. Note any stains' locations and causes for your cleaner.

Caring for your Gown After Your Wedding

Have your dress professionally cleaned within one month of your wedding - the sooner, the better for stain removal success. Even if you don't see visible stains, invisible substances like champagne, perfume, or perspiration can yellow over time if not properly cleaned.

Choose cleaners specialising in wedding dress preservation rather than standard dry cleaners. Wedding dress cleaning requires different techniques and products than regular garments due to delicate fabrics, intricate beading, and multiple material types in a single dress.

If preserving your dress for future generations or sentimental keeping, use professional preservation services. Proper preservation includes acid-free materials, climate-controlled storage methods, and techniques preventing yellowing or deterioration over decades. We can recommend trusted local preservation specialists.

Repairs and Maintenance on your Gown

After professional cleaning, inspect your dress carefully for any damage that occurred during your celebration. Common issues include loose beading from dancing, small tears in delicate fabrics, pulled threads from heels or rings, or hem damage from outdoor wear.

Address any repairs promptly before preservation or storage. We're available for post-wedding repairs including reattaching loose beading or sequins, mending small tears or pulled seams, reinforcing areas showing stress or wear, and restoring your dress to its pristine condition for preservation.

Minor damage is completely normal after a full day of celebration. Most issues are easily repairable by experienced seamstresses who understand wedding dress construction. Addressing repairs before long-term storage prevents minor problems from worsening over time and ensures your dress remains beautiful.
